Brazil: Sérgio Moro is banned from practicing for six months but receives a minister’s salary

According to the local press, Moro was also authorized to teach classes and write articles for the press during the six-month period, starting on the date he resigned from the government, on April 24.

The impediment to exercise professional activities right after the executive left was justified by the potential conflict of interests, by the fact that he had access to privileged information in the Government.

Sergio Moro resigned from the ministerial post at the end of April, accusing the country’s President, Jair Bolsonaro, of attempting to interfere with the Federal Police, following the resignation of former head of the institution Maurício Valeixo.

According to Moro, Bolsonaro allegedly demanded the replacement of the Federal Police superintendent in Rio de Janeiro to avoid investigations against family members and allies.

“The President told me, more than once, expressly, that he wanted to have a person of his personal contact, [para quem] he could call, [de quem] he could gather information, [com quem] he could collect intelligence reports. Be the director [da Polícia Federal], be a superintendent ”, declared Moro, when he resigned.

Since then, Moro has given interviews and has been heard by Justice against Bolsonaro.

Moro was one of the main members of the Brazilian Government and maintained a greater popularity than that of the head of state himself, with whom he came into conflict a few times, including in a previous attempt to exonerate Valeixo, in August last year.

The former minister became known internationally for leading Lava Jato, the largest anti-corruption operation in Brazil, and for condemning former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Moro left the judiciary to join the Bolsonaro government, but had been suffering consecutive wear and tear due to differences with the President.
