Austria wants to go back to everyday life. Sebastian Kurz (33, ÖVP) announced a loosening of the strict corona measures on Monday morning. It should start already after Easter.
–
But gradually. “Please keep to the Corona measures and do not celebrate with relatives and friends,” the Austrian Chancellor appealed at the beginning of his speech.
–
His exit strategy looks like this:
Shops can open again after Easter – but only those with up to 400 square meters as well as DIY megastores with garden centers
The mask requirement applies from April 14 in all shops and public transport
The exit restrictions will be maintained until the end of April
The goal: The entire trade should run again by May 1st
Hairdressing salons will also be allowed to reopen from May 1st
Restaurants, hotels and schools may not open again until mid-May at the earliest
Exams in schools may take place under strict conditions
No concerts and other events until the end of June

The number of new infections decreases daily
Even before the first death in Austria on March 12, Sebastian Kurz had restricted travel. Nothing has been going anywhere in the country since March 16: schools and universities are closed, you can only go out for shopping. The protective mask requirement followed later.
“The quick and restrictive reaction now also gives us the opportunity to get out of this crisis more quickly,” Kurz justified his tough-nosed course on Monday. “However, only if we continue to consistently adhere to the measures and stand together as well as we have done so far.”
–
Emergency brake is provided
However, should the easing lead to a relapse, Austria already has an eye on the emergency brake. Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (58, Greens) spoke of a “remeasurement of the situation” at the end of April. That is painful, but necessary.

Austria is the first country in Europe with a concrete exit strategy. Kurz’s plan could be exemplary for other European nations.

Corona virus
—
The corona virus currently keeps the world in suspense. Many countries take measures such as closing schools or borders and restricting public events to prevent them from spreading. The virus is also rampant in Switzerland. All current information and figures on the subject are available in the Coronavirus ticker.

Do I have the corona virus or just the flu?
—
The corona virus continues to spread – also in Switzerland. Especially in the flu season, it is difficult to assess yourself whether you have the corona virus or whether you simply have the usual flu. The differences are fine, but there are. LOOK clears up.
