Apple strongly recommends not to close your MacBook by leaving a cache on the webcam

Apple advises you not to close your MacBook by leaving a piece of tape or a cache on the webcam. According to the manufacturer, the space separating the screen from the keyboard is not designed to shelter a foreign body. This can damage the screen and cause some features such as automatic brightness to malfunction.

The fear of being observed without his knowledge via his webcam. A legitimate fear if ever there was one. The risks are unfortunately real and nobody is really safe from a skilled and ill-advised hacker. We remember for example of an American family’s Amazon Ring camera hack. After several days of observing all of the family’s actions, the hacker had managed to take control of the camera speaker. Result, an 8-year-old girl terrorized.

There are a multitude of stories of this ilk, and it is normal that some users take the reflex to obscure the camera on their laptop with a piece of scotch tape or a cover provided for this purpose. Regarding this protection of fortune, Apple has some reservations. According to the manufacturer, it is dangerous for your MacBook to leave this cover when you close it.

Apple’s advice

« If you close your MacBook leaving the cover on the camera, you may damage your screen because the space between the screen and the keyboard is not designed for this use. By covering the built-in camera, you may also prevent certain settings, such as auto brightness and True Tone, from working. Instead of using a camera cover, watch the indicator light to see if the camera is active, and choose which applications can access your camera in Computer System Preferences ”.

This advice therefore applies to MacBooks, MacBook Air and to MacBook Pro. But what to do in the case where it is imperative to permanently hide the camera (work environment housing sensitive data, working from home, etc.). If you are in this situation, Apple gives you three additional tips:

  • Choose a cover not thicker than a sheet of paper, i.e. 0.1 mm
  • If the cover is thicker than a sheet of paper, remove it before closing your computer
  • Avoid tape and any other material that leaves adhesive residue
