Things went well for the German clubs in Europe. The Bundesliga clubs took five wins in five games. It started with Borussia Dortmund (2-1 against Paris Saint-Germain) and Rasenballsport Leipzig (1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur). The German Europa League participants followed suit on Thursday. Both Eintracht Frankfurt (4-1 against FC Salzburg), Bayer Leverkusen (2-1 against FC Porto) and VfL Wolfsburg (2-1 against Malmö FF) achieved positive results.
Thanks to the winning games, the Bundesliga not only made up a few points in the UEFA five-year ranking and achieved the best result of all countries and associations at European level. In the meantime, Germany has 13,857 points this season and is only behind England (15,285) and Spain (15,071). In the overall ranking of the past five years, Spain is at the top, Germany is in third place behind England. Italy is fourth.
Particularly important: the lead over France in fifth place has grown. The French only have two representatives left in the race. Paris Saint-Germain lost their game, Olympique Lyon won’t play in the Champions League until next week (against Juventus). Fifth place would mean the loss of a starting place in the premier class. Due to the strong current season, Germany made up five points on France and is almost 14 points ahead.
Next week, FC Bayern (against Chelsea) and the Europa League participants Frankfurt, Leverkusen and Wolfsburg mentioned above can once again make positive headlines – and book the second round ticket in the case of the latter.
