A sandstorm engulfs the world’s tallest building in Dubai

The world’s tallest building was engulfed in a dun curtain in Dubai on Wednesday as a sandstorm that has swept across parts of the Middle East hit the United Arab Emirates.

The 828-meter Burj Khalifa tower, which dominates Dubai and is usually visible throughout this financial center, was partially hidden by this meteorological phenomenon, which has already affected parts of Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Iran and other countries in recent days.

The sandstorms have closed airports and schools, and sent thousands of people to hospitals suffering from respiratory problems.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Dubai was now considered “dangerous”, according to waqi.info, an app that measures air pollution.

Sandstorms in the Middle East are becoming more frequent and intense, due to deforestation, overgrazing and overexploitation of river water, experts say.

Emirati authorities have issued nationwide advisories urging people to remain vigilant.

“Abu Dhabi Police urge drivers to exercise caution due to low visibility caused by winds and sand,” he tweeted.
