a place for those who have nothing left

Pass: four letters for a saving universe. Under this acronym hides the Permanence of access to health care, a discreet place located close to the Bel-Air hospital where a medico-social team welcomes, treats and repairs as best as possible those who have lost everything. This cell depends on the CHR of Metz-Thionville. There is also one in Metz. All major cities have their own.

Here, no demanding patients, just men and women whom life has not really spoiled: isolated people who are not or no longer entitled to health insurance, destitute, homeless, battered by life, refugees on their journeys unspeakable… The Pass is aimed at this entire fringe of humanity.

Humanitarian medicine

“We are here to support, help open up rights and treat for free”, summarizes Dr Justine Grigorcea, who enjoys this universe at the frontiers of humanitarian medicine and emergency medicine. “When I called here to apply five years ago, the secretary thought it was a joke”, slips the general practitioner in a burst of laughter.

The practice of the profession with this invisible and precarious public is not given to everyone. It takes empathy and also the thick leather to listen and fix what can be. “People arrive with advanced pathologies and enormous trauma. Some have been tortured, beaten, deprived of food, they have lost loved ones…” Post-traumatic stress is a common denominator.

In his tiny office, Dr. Grigorcea is equipped to deal with everything: small wounds, casts, dermatological care, drug injections… “Each consultation takes a lot of time; you have to be sure to understand everything well and also to make yourself understood, because, often, the language barrier is there, and then we cannot decently rush our patients who are already so badly…” The back-and-forth comes with the technical platforms of the CHR (radiology, pharmacy, etc.) operates as soon as necessary.

Priority to social monitoring

The secretary, Cassandre Wagner, and the social worker, Maylis Sol, take care of the administrative side of each patient, and that’s no small feat. “The goal is to help people find or regain their rights to health insurance,” they confirm, but, as with medical consultations, you have to be resourceful and mentally strong.

The Pass is a transitional structure, “the goal is that everyone can achieve the opening of their rights”, resumes Maylis Sol. Each year, the Thionville Pass sees between 900 and 1,000 people pass through. “We have already managed to get people off the street, and that is really very rewarding,” concludes Dr. Grigorcea. We do not doubt it.
