It was one bad second. “I worked as a toolmaker in Veltechna Čakovice, where a frame saw caught my left wrist and ended my dream of becoming a successful pole vaulter.” recalls Wagner. There was not much missing and he could lose his hand. To this day, it has a monument in the form of a large scar. Instead of the Olympics, he had to go to the barracks. “I joined the company to a company trained to defend ammunition depots, and after the war I went to the State Conservatory to study double bass,” adds the musician.

Scary bus crash
For the second time, his neck was in Mongolia. And literally. “The Prague concert sent us on a tour, which was to begin in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on August 19, 1968. We were to have our first concert on August 21,” Karel recalls. “At noon we were taken by bus for a ride through the city and at the foot of the mountains we crashed into the valley due to bad brakes,” describes the worst moments of his life. He himself fell out of the bus through a small window, which saved his life. When he looked at the pulled-out wreck, he couldn’t understand how he could crawl through such a small space.

Pole vault and football record holder
It is well known that the bass champion is also an excellent footballer. He scored 278 goals for Amphora football, which is the most in its history so far. “I caught the youth league in my youth, it was the highest competition,” he boasted to the daily Aha! Karel. In addition to football, he also played pole vault, in which he excelled.
