Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Not only elderly, young people are now also vulnerable to infections corona virus severe. A recent study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that one in three young adults is susceptible Covid-19 with severe symptoms.

The study also found that smoke plays an important role in causing the severity.

Results Education This was obtained after researchers from the University of California, United States analyzed more than 8,000 people aged 18-25 years who took part in the National Health Interview Survey. Researchers looked at severe medical vulnerability associated with Covid-19 with risk indicators from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including health conditions and smoking habits.

Researchers found 32 percent of the total study population was medically susceptible to Covid-19 with severe symptoms. However, when a group of young people who smoked or used vape were excluded from the analysis, vulnerability decreased by half – to 16 percent.

“The difference is largely driven by young adults who report that they smoke within 30 days (1 in 10) and 30 days of e-cigarette use (1 in 14),” the report wrote.

The study also shows young men have a higher risk of severe Covid-19 due to smoking, even though women have more asthma and immune conditions.

However, in men and women who are not smokers, women have a higher risk of experiencing severe Covid-19.

“Recent evidence suggests that smoking is associated with a higher likelihood of Covid-19 development, including increased disease severity, ICU or death. Smoking has a significant effect on young adults, who usually have low levels for most chronic diseases,” said Sally researchers Adams, quoted from CNN.

Even so researchers acknowledge this study has several limitations such as lack of information about Covid-19 in the 18-25 years age group.
