The MR ucclois opposes the total closure of the Bois de la Cambre to cars

The MR of Uccle announced this Sunday evening that it had launched a petition to oppose the total closure of the Bois de la Cambre from car traffic, a measure envisaged by the mayor of the City of Brussels, Philippe Close (PS), for summer and weekends, beyond the crisis linked to the coronavirus pandemic.

This online petition entitled “No to the total closure of the Bois de la Cambre“was initiated by the head of the MR group at the municipal council of Uccle, Diane Culer, and by the Brussels deputy Aurélie Czekalski, who is also vice-president of the MR ucclois.

They, in the explanatory memorandum, denounced the decision “unilateral“of the City of Brussels to close the Bois de la Cambre entirely, which it is the sole manager, to traffic.

A unilateral decision

According to the two liberal elected officials, the Bois de la Cambre is an important communication axis allowing residents to quickly access the hotspots of Brussels whose chronic mobility problems are well established.

Since April 2012, the Bois de la Cambre is partially closed to car traffic on weekends and public holidays, but certain arteries are still accessible to vehicles.

Since March 19, 2020, due to the imperatives of social distancing, the City of Brussels has completely closed the Bois de la Cambre to traffic to give space to walkers and sportsmen.

By a unilateral decision, the authorities of the City of Brussels have extended the application of this measure until the end of August“, underline Culer and Czekalski.

According to them, Uccle is the first municipality impacted in terms of mobility because its inhabitants use, like many citizens of the south of Brussels, daily the Bois de la Cambre.

Closing the Bois de la Cambre, beyond confinement measures, is environmental and economic nonsense“, they stress again.
