It has already been reported that the Latvian basketball champion team “VEF Rīga” for the last two years has announced that the defender of the Latvian national team Aigars Šķēle will play in its ranks next season.
“Sportazinas.com” contacted Aigars to ask why he decided to play in Latvia again after a two-year break.
“Knowing the current situation in the world, which is related to the consequences of the pandemic, I did not want to wait any longer for any options. I was hoping for Russia and the VTB league, but the spread of the virus there is still high, so there was a lot of uncertainty, but “VEF Rīga” came up with a good offer that satisfied me. The previous season ended several months earlier than planned, so I wanted stability and VEF could offer it to me, ”begins Skele, who added: work at a high level. ”
We asked if there were any talks with the previous club: “With Tallinn [„Kalev”/”Cramo”] there were not even club talks. The club has a lot of uncertainty about next season right now, but to be honest, I’m not aware of that. ”
As the main reason for returning home, Skele mentions that he will have the opportunity to prove himself as a leader in a good level European tournament.
“In conversations with the club management, I felt that I would be counted on and would play an important role in the team’s game. In addition, I am still young enough – I am 27 years old, I can prove myself as a leader on a solid level, because [FIBA] Every year the membership of the Champions League becomes stronger. At the same time, after a short break, I will be able to play at home in front of my spectators. Hopefully, I will be able to please the local fans with a successful individual performance, as well as help the team to win important victories. The slice is known for its versatility, being able to play as both a leader and an attacking defender.
“We have not talked specifically about the position I will play in. But I understand what the coach expects from me – so much I am with the ball, I score points myself and create situations for partners. Basically, play the way I’ve been doing it my whole life. A lot also depends on the situation with the legionnaires, because it is still difficult for Americans to get to Europe, ”concludes Šķēle.
Last season, the 27-year-old represented Tallinn’s Kalev / Cramo, playing in both the VTB United Basketball League and the Latvian-Estonian Basketball League. On average, Šķēle stood out in the Latvian-Estonian league with 11.1 points, 4.5 assists and 2.8 balls under the baskets. In the single league, Slices are 11.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists.
Previously, Šķēle has played for the French team Antibas “Sharks”, one of the leading clubs in Latvia “Ventspils”, as well as for the teams “Valmiera / ORDO”, “Jūrmala / Fenikss” and “Barons”. This will be the return of Šķēle to the ranks of “VEF Rīga”, where the defender also played in 2014/2015. during the season.
In 2016, Aigars together with his brother Armands Skele helped Valmiera to win a historic triumph in the LBL competitions.
