Dutch short track world champion Lara van Ruijven has lost the fight for her life.

After about two weeks in a coma, the 27-year-old died in a clinic in Perpignan, France, as a result of an autoimmune reaction. This was announced by the Dutch ice sports association KNSB. Van Ruijven had been operated on several times before, most recently new complications occurred.
“What terrible news we received. It is so final and surreal. It will be missing from the sports world, ”said short-track bonds coach Jeroen Otter in an association announcement.
Van Ruijven, who won World Cup gold over 500 m in 2019, was with the national team on an ice cream course in the Pyrenees town of Font-Romeu. At the end of June, she was taken to the hospital with health problems, the autoimmune reaction was diagnosed with serious complications, including internal bleeding.
