CARACAS President Nicolas Maduro expel the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Venezuela, Isabel Brilhante Pedrosa. The expulsion is in response to EU sanctions against top socialist government officials.

Maduro announced his decision in a speech broadcast by state television stations after the European Union Council imposed sanctions on 11 members of Maduro’s inner circle on charges of undermining the power of the National Assembly and the rule of law in the country.

In his announcement, Maduro said ambassador Isabel Brilhante Pedrosa was given 72 hours to leave Venezuela.

The announcement of the Venezuelan number one came along with the seven-year moment the country was caught in a devastating recession, compounded by a new corona virus pandemic (Covid-19) and a drop in oil production. “European Union supremacy issues sanctions resolution on Venezuelans defending the constitution,” Maduro said, referring to sanctions against three pro-government National Assembly members, as quoted. Bloomberg, Tuesday (6/30/2020).

Maduro also criticized the Spanish Ambassador to Caracas, Jesus Silva, who was accused by Maduro of participating in his overthrow led by Leopoldo Lopez in April 2019. The coup attempt failed.

He also condemned Silva’s involvement in the May attack aimed at arresting him, but ended in failure.

Maduro characterizes Silva’s actions as collusion with Lopez to commit criminal acts. Venezuela will consider diplomatic action related to Silva’s actions in the socialist country.
