Teófilo Cubillas provided an interview for the official website of Lima Alliance Where he talked about various topics, one of them was how he had to reorganize the team after the tragic Fokker accident in 1987.
As is known, almost the entire Alianza Lima campus died in the Fokker tragedy, when the plane that was transporting the Blue and Whites team from the jungle to Lima crashed in the Callao Sea. For the remainder of the season in 1987 and part of 1988, it would be Teófilo Cubillas who was in charge of assembling the team.
One of the players called by Teófilo Cubillas to put together that squad in 1988 was Wilmar Valencia, whom the Blue and Whites’ leadership and especially its president did not see favorably.
“The Alliance leadership wanted me to take over the team. They let me know that they did not want to have Wilmar or Roberto. When I left the meeting I went to look for them and told them that I needed them. The president did not take it in the best way, but I told him that he had called me to assemble the team and that, if he did not accept them, I was also leaving. He had no choice but to accept. The first match against Bolognesi (1988) was a total party ”, revealed Teófilo Cubillas.
That 1988 would be the year of the retirement of Teófilo Cubillas, while Wilmar Valencia would leave in 1989 for Bolivia’s Blooming, to return to the Blue and Whites in 1990, where he stayed until the 94 season.
