New debate about easing in Darmstadt

DARMSTADT – Can citizens decide for themselves when to wear a mask, how much distance to keep? The debate about easing infection protection, which the Thuringian Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (left) started, has also reached Darmstadt. Decision-makers from politics, business and health care fluctuate between caution and courageous progress. Mayor Jochen Partsch (Greens) is clearly on the side of the confident.

The question that ECHO asked all of the interviewees: “Would it be the responsibility of Darmstadt to take responsibility for the protective measures or loosening at this time?” OB Partsch says: “Yes, in view of the stronger regional view of the infection process and appropriate measures to contain it, this is conceivable and responsible in any case.” But as few cases as there are currently: From the city’s perspective, the pandemic is not over. “The virus is still there and all measures that help to slow the spread further are sensible and necessary now.”

Basically, according to the mayor, the past few months have shown “that the citizens of Darmstadt have largely followed the guidelines in an exemplary manner and have thus made a decisive contribution to successfully containing the infection.” However, this was done within the framework of legal requirements. The decision to withdraw further anticoronaMeasures lie with the State of Hesse.

Solidarity and reasonable

Tim Huß, chairman of the SPD, also praises the prudent Darmstadt residents. He is “skeptical” when it comes to quick loosening. “The crowd is solidary and reasonable, but a few ignorants are enough and the scope for action is gone again.” He found the previous easing to be “very close to the economy and very hostile to the family”, which would have to be different in the future.

At the IHK Darmstadt it says: “No individual courses by municipalities,” said spokesman Thomas Klein. “The past few weeks have shown that a gradual and careful approach was the right thing to do.” In any case, the protective measures should be uniform across the country “in order to avoid a patchwork of rags that is difficult for companies to understand and distortion of competition”.

Markus Hoschek from Heag’s board of directors also believes the Darmstadt residents that they “handle each other responsibly” – even without state-prescribed mouth protection and distance rules. One had “got through the first wave surprisingly well”; that was not foreseeable at the beginning of March when the federal and state governments imposed the drastic restrictions. However: “If we run into a second wave due to hasty easing, it will do us much more damage,” says Hoschek.

He sees the state of Hesse, however, on a partly incomprehensible course when it comes to decisions on easing. Rhineland-Palatinate has similar numbers of infections. “But the tennis and golf courses, for example, were open much earlier.” Bavaria had previously opened the daycare centers. According to his current impression, Hessen was “lagging behind in some areas without the number of cases”.

Take responsibility yourself

At the clinic too, it is believed that Darmstadt could take responsibility for protective measures itself. The medical director, Nawid Khaladj, says: “Yes, this is the responsibility of the Darmstadt Clinic, as the coordinating hospital for all of southern Hesse, a good overview of the number of new Sars Cov 2 infections, not only about Darmstadt, but also about the other coverage areas in Hesse. ” A very close exchange is given about the Hessen planning team and the city’s crisis team. “This enables us to see any outbreaks locally very quickly, take measures at the local level and counteract them together.” But he also warns: “The free capacity in the hospitals at the moment must not give us false security. We should all continue to take the applicable hygiene and clearance rules seriously and adhere to them.”

The Elisabethenstift says: “As a hospital, we can in no way relax the protective measures, but must continue to be very careful and careful.” You have to “care for and protect very vulnerable patients as well as our employees,” says Mathias Pfisterer, Medical Director.

After Pentecost, normal operation in the hospitals is started up again, “which makes sense since these patients also have to be cared for and their treatment pressure is increasing”. Separate isolation areas will continue to exist for patients suffering from Sars-Cov-2. However, the hospitals are still obliged to keep a certain proportion of the bed capacity for Sars-Cov-2 infected.
