Madagascar becomes the first African country to launch 5G

Telma Madagascar has launched its 5G commercial network to offer its subscribers broadband services made possible by the new generation of mobile connectivity. Powered by Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC), the 5G network is now in service in Madagascar.

The two main 5G use cases for the Madagascar market are improved mobile broadband (eMBB) and fixed wireless access (FWA). With more capacity, higher data rates and reduced latency, 5G will allow Telma customers to experience new things, from games and entertainment to IoT and business applications. Health care and education are areas that will benefit greatly from this technology. Ericsson was selected by Telma in October 2019 to modernize its central and radio network in Madagascar by relying on the 5G partnership existing between the two companies.

Patrick Pisal Hamida, CEO of Telma Madagascar, says: “5G will transform the way we use and adopt technology and will have a huge impact on businesses and society in Madagascar. It will provide broadband, ultra-low latency and highly secure connectivity to a large number of devices; and it’s a technology that will unlock a wide range of new use cases through Telma’s next generation network. We are very proud to be among the first countries in the world to deploy this technology. It is a new step forward for Madagascar as one of the main countries of the Indian Ocean and Africa in terms of ICT ”.

Telma has activated the 5G network on the medium band 3.6-3.7 GHz using the latest radio access and transport products from the Ericsson Radio System range.

Fadi Pharaon, President of Ericsson Middle East and Africa, said: “Today’s announcement marks an important step in our long-standing partnership with Telma, since we are launching the first 5G network in Madagascar. 5G will accelerate the digital transformation of all sectors of society as well as industries in the country, allowing new opportunities and applications in areas such as health, education, energy services and agriculture. We look forward to leading joint innovations with Telma, bringing our cutting edge technology to support Madagascar’s vision of connectivity and our commitment to Africa. ”

With the launch of Telma, Ericsson now has 41 5G live networks in 24 countries. Ericsson’s 5G live networks are one of 95 5G commercial agreements or contracts that the company has entered into with operators unique in the world, 53 of which are publicly announced 5G agreements.
