If you are not subscribed to ICI Tou.tv Extra or Club illico, you may be a little lost at the 35th Gémeaux Awards on September 20. Indeed, three of the five most named series at the gala have not yet been broadcast on traditional TV.

Online on ICI Tou.tv Extra in early March, That’s how i love you leads the way with 15 nominations. The new offering of François Létourneau and Jean-François Rivard (Black sequence) dominates the section reserved for dramatic series. The conjugal misadventures of criminal apprentices from Sainte-Foy could notably allow Marilyn Castonguay, René Richard Cyr and Sophie Desmarais to win interpretation awards.

The fight promises to be fierce between That’s how i love you and Fragile, another series available on HERE Tou.tv Extra. The moving drama of Serge Boucher (Lights, Confessions) obtains 13 nominations. Finalist 11 times, the excellent thriller thriller The flaw of Club illico could also give a hard time to the favorites.

We should also highlight the great performances of All the life (7), On call 24/7 (7), The blue Hour (6), Let go (6), The countries from above (6), Can you hear me ? (6) and Various facts (6).

Absent noticed
As for those who are absent, it is impossible to ignore the poor performance of Runaway. While in 2018, the Michelle Allen series had won 12 nominations, this year, Fanny does not catch any. Members of the Academy also shunned ferretsEpidemic. TVA’s coronaviral thriller grapples with two meager nominations (makeup / hairstyle and artistic distribution).
These two series can however console themselves by looking at their audience ratings, of 1,752,000 and 1,600,000 viewers respectively.
A gala without COVID-19
As for the gala that Véronique Cloutier will host on ICI Télé, we know that it will be recorded at Radio-Canada’s studio 42. Pandemic forces, the production team is studying several formulas. Very white appointments
Like the Artis gala, unveiled last week, the Gemini awards nominations remain particularly white this year. In interpretation, there are only 5 “colored” finalists, divided into 16 categories. Result: 6% of the nominees are from visible minorities, when in reality, representation approaches 15% in Quebec, according to Statistics Canada. And for Montreal, we are talking about 25%.
In animation, the selection is more heterogeneous. Among the number of finalists who bring a minimum of colors to the 12 categories, we note Pierre-Yves Lord (100 geniuses), Didier Orméjuste (Le Super Bowl), Adib Alkhalidey (Just for Laughs Evenings with Julien Lacroix) and Céline Galipeau.
To change things
Véronique Cloutier is not unmoved by this under-representation. In interview at Journal, the host of the gala recognizes that our TV lacks diversity. Finding a solution to correct the situation quickly is complex, however.
“Among broadcasters, I feel a real and deep desire to change things,” she says. But it takes time. I know we’ve been saying this for several years. But unfortunately, we have to repeat. It’s sad, but sometimes, a drama has to happen, like the death of George Floyd in the United States, for us to wake up, review our priorities and say: “Hey! We must act! ” I think that’s what’s happening right now. It shakes everyone. And our industry is no exception. “
For her part, the president of the board of directors of the Academy in Quebec, Sophie Deschênes, ensures that “everyone puts their shoulders to the wheel” to ensure better diversity on the air. “Actions have been taken. We must continue to develop all of this. “
