Following the example of the European Championship and the Copa América, the Africa Cup has also been moved by one year. The next edition of the Continental Championship is now scheduled for early 2022.
The Africa Cup was scheduled in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6, but the corona pandemic forced the African football federation CAF to move the tournament. The CAF would be concerned if the remaining qualifying matches before then can all be played.
Relief at clubs
The decision means that clubs like Hakim Ziyech (Chelsea), André Onana (Ajax), Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, Naby Keita (all Liverpool) and Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City) will not have to give up in the middle of an overcrowded season.
It is still unclear whether the 2023 Africa Cup will be postponed by one year. Normally, the tournament is completed once every two years.
