+ 10% in two weeks – Corriere.it

On 9 March last year, the Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte presented the decree “I’m staying at home” which provided for the extension to the whole national territory of measures to contain the infection initially limited to the provinces most affected by what was called coronavirus at the time. In these twelve months we have recorded a constant fluctuation in the level of concern on the part of citizens in relation to the daily trend of infections and deaths. Today 45% of Italians consider Covid a high threat on a personal level: it is a percentage that takes us back to last autumn, when the second wave of infections began. Concern increases with age, among the less educated, housewives, retirees and the working class. On the contrary, it appears homogeneous overall among the different electorates, confirming the fact that it is a sentiment more influenced by the demographic condition than by the political orientation. The perceived threat is even more acute when referring to one’s area of residence (57%) or to the entire country (75%).

Too many rule violations

Two out of three Italians (65%) think they exist too many rule violations and the majority of citizens did not understand the importance of continuing to comply with the directives of the authorities. It is a belief that has risen sharply over the past few months. On the contrary, one in four (24%) is of the opinion that most of them continue to show civic sense and respect for the rules. The stern gaze directed at fellow countrymen is partly due to the usual attitude of attributing negative behaviors to others and to oneself virtuous ones, and partly to the emphasis that the media give to crowded situations, especially in cities, to recall the attention on the risks you run. It follows that the perception of an undoubtedly unfortunate phenomenon expands, but fortunately limited to a minority of citizens.

The more time passes, the more negative judgments

The vaccination campaign, as it has developed so far, it is rejected by 46% of Italians, while 29% give a positive opinion. The more time passes, the more negative judgments increase. The figure is not surprising considering that, in the face of a constant growth of people who show their intention to be vaccinated as soon as possible (which went from 37% in mid-November to 53% at the end of February), citizens complain of a shortage of vaccines. and the slowness of the campaign but also criticize the criteria for defining vaccination priorities (especially with respect to some professional categories), bureaucratic complications and logistical aspects. Added to this are political preferences, given that positive judgments prevail only among voters of the former government majority, while negative evaluations are clearly prevalent among center-right voters and abstentionists. In short, it is not all roses and flowers, and the reference to the “primroses” designed by Stefano Boeri is not accidental.

Pd and M5S voters for tough restrictions

It is therefore not surprising that the majority of Italians (53%) welcomed it the decision of the Draghi government to alternate Commissioner Domenico Arcuri with General Francesco Paolo Figliuolo; the reasons are two: 34% of the opinion that Arcuri was not up to par (in particular, the center-right electorate with the highest level among FdI voters with 72% is of this opinion) and 19% , regardless of the assessments on Arcuri, believes that it was necessary to give a signal of discontinuity. Only 10% disagreed with the decision to replace the commissioner and 37% did not express themselves. A further confirmation of the citizens’ concern is given by the opinions that emerge regarding the measures to contain the contagion: 44% would prefer a hard lockdown, of limited duration, but uniformly extended throughout the country; 30% consider it appropriate to continue with the current restrictions, while 14% would like to relax the measures. The first option has registered an increase of 10 points in just two weeks and is more desirable among older people and housewives, as well as among the voters of Pd (60%) and M5S (50%). In the center-right, while consensus for more restrictive measures prevails, opinions are more divided. It should be noted that among the leaguers 18% are asking for a relaxation. It’s been a year since the term lockdown broke into our lexicon. If the vaccination campaign does not proceed quickly, the fear is that it will remain there for a long time.
