YTN reported successive reports of coach assault and near torture harassment in the elementary school swimming department.
There is currently a criminal trial on the coach accused of being the perpetrator.
I will connect the reporter covering the case over the phone and listen to the details. Reporter Na Hyun-ho!
First of all, there are four charges applied to the coach, including special assault. What is the specific allegation?
[기자]
The incident took place in 2017, four years ago.
The accused was a swimming coach at an elementary school in Mokpo, Jeollanam-do at the time.
There are four charges including child abuse, special assault, injury, and assault.
There are a total of 3 victims specified in the complaint.
At that time, I was 11 years old and at least 7 years old.
If you carefully read the contents of the complaint, I guess the training would have been terrifying.
It was basic to use the six heads because the practice swimming record was poor.
They even hit the victim’s cheeks in succession with’finger feet’ made of hard rubber.
They even hit the shin and instep with a steel spanner used to assemble the swimming starter.
There was also bullying that was close to water torture.
He grabbed the victim’s hair and repeatedly put his face in and out of the water 10 times.
They stepped on the victim’s back with their feet and pushed the victim’s head and body closer to the bottom of the pool to prevent breathing.
It is said that during this process, the victim hit the belly of the student with his knee.
Let’s listen to the story of the victim at the time.

Just by looking at the contents of the complaint, I can guess how terrified the children would have been.
Some students have stopped swimming now.
[기자]
The students our reporter met said they started swimming just because the water was good.
I had a dream of training sincerely and becoming a swimmer later on.
But now I quit swimming.
He said he could no longer swim due to continued violence and harassment four years ago.
Sometimes he said he felt even life threatening.
I started swimming because I liked it, and it turned into a nightmare.
I even informed my parents that I couldn’t bear it, but they insisted that the assault continued after that.
One student said that even after he stopped swimming, he was afraid to see only a man who had a body similar to that of a swimming coach at the time.
The swimming coach, accused of being the perpetrator, knelt down to his parents in 2017 and even apologized.
However, he said that even now, an apology at the time was forced to save the swimmer.
It also completely denies the fact of the assault.
On the basis of that, it was pointed out that some students in the swimming department were not right at the time.
Let’s listen to the explanation of the swimming coach at the time.

If the coach was violent in the elementary school swimming club, even the coach would have had to stop it.
By the way, the coach of the school’s swimming department was the wife of a swimming coach who was accused of being a perpetrator?
[기자]
It was in 2011 that a swimming department was established in the elementary school.
The third swimming coach came in 3 years after the establishment of the swimming department.
It was none other than the husband of the same school teacher.
The swimming coach explained that the full-time swimming coach was not licensed, so he quit his company life and became a coach.
In response, the educational authorities said that there was no problem by selecting a coach with a qualification as a game instructor through the formal competition process.
In one school’s swimming department, the husband was the coach and the wife was the coach.
However, the graduated son and daughter of the coach and the coach, who are married, also participated in the training of the swimming department at this school.
Most of the victims claimed that the training was tailored to the coach’s son and daughter.
In other words, my father was an elementary school swimming coach, my mother was an incumbent teacher and coach, and my two children who had already graduated trained together as athletes.
Because of this, there are doubts about the background whether or not the child could continue training with the alma mater’s swimming club even after graduating from elementary school.
This is the explanation of the swim coach at the time.

After this fact became known, the school administrators were said to have an attitude of blaming the children, right?
[기자]
At that time, the victims are still regretting.
It was because of the attitude of the school administrator.
Some of the swimmers said that there were children who said they did not fit the coach, and rather, they pursued the victims.
He even claimed to have told victims who were elementary school students at the time, “If you lie, you will go to the police station later and get caught.”
In response, the principals at the time drew a line that they were all lies.
He denied that he had never met the victims and that he had never said anything like that.
In March 2017, the parents of the victims first announced that their children had been assaulted.
I complained about the damage to the coach, the wife of the swimming coach.
Victims said the coach’s violence continued until four months later.
It is a question of whether the school responded properly at the time.
[앵커]
I just mentioned how to deal with the education authorities.
This is the content that was reported exclusively today.
At that time, you were dismissed because of the violence of the swimming coach.
[기자]
It was on August 17th, 2017 that the case of student assault by an elementary school swimming coach was received.
In March 2017, five months ago, the parents of the victim informed the coach’s wife and the director, who was the head of the school affairs, but as the assault continued afterwards, it was publicized.
Eventually, after two weeks, the swimming coach, who was accused of being the assault perpetrator, was dismissed.
At the time, the elementary school reported the reasons for dismissal of the swimming coach as’expiration of the appointment period’ to the Department of Education.
The swimming department didn’t mention anything about school violence that was a problem.
Let’s hear the explanation from the principal at the time.
[당시 교장 : (학교폭력이) 민감한 사안이고 있는가, 없는가를 해 나가는 그런 상황으로 학교에서는 진행됐어요. 그래서 그것이 사실인지 아닌지조차도 저는 지금도 모릅니다.]
Earlier, the swimming coach went to the parent’s workplace in a frantic way and prayed for forgiveness.
Admitted to the assault, they knelt down to their knees and rained, and even the police were dispatched.
However, time was delayed as the swimming coach moved the address and it became difficult to secure physical evidence.
After two years of investigation by the prosecution, it was handed over to trial.
Two years have passed from the time the victims raised the issue to the prosecution’s investigation, and a full re-investigation of the education authorities, which did not take any such action, seems to be necessary.
