Actress Jeon Do-yeon transformed into a worldview of a contract killer through the movie ‘Gil Bok-soon’. It is the face of her mother, who relentlessly wields her knife with her cold eyes, and then worries about her adolescent daughter at home. Here, even the full action using various tools is completed by Jeon Do-yeon.
‘Kil Bok-soon’ (director Byun Seong-hyeon) is the story of Gil Bok-soon (Jeon Do-yeon), a legendary killer in the contract killing industry, getting caught up in an unavoidable confrontation just before renewing his contract with the company. Gil Bok-soon is a special A-class killer belonging to the contract killing company MK Entertainment. He’s 100% successful at whatever the company tells him to do, making him an industry myth. The most difficult thing for him is educating his 15-year-old daughter Gil Jae-yeong (Kim Sia). It’s hard not to know what’s on the inside of her daughter who has entered puberty.
The double life of a working mother with a job as a killer is an interesting subject. Gil Bok-soon is a killer who kills people with a smile, without blood or tears. The relaxed expression and lean gestures show how long he has been active as a killer. He is also a busy mother who takes care of her adolescent daughter when she returns home. The atmosphere changes the moment he tells the murder target after a long fight, “It’s time for the mart, so I have to go home quickly.” Returning home, he works hard on education, such as doing overdue housework and attending parent meetings.
Killing people is easy, but raising a daughter is not easy. She agonizes over the cigarette she found in her daughter’s pocket several times, and dealing with her daughter’s accident at school is a headache. To make matters worse, I don’t know how to react to the secret my daughter confided in me. By setting the top killer’s biggest concern is his daughter, it narrows the distance with the character who is far away.
As such, Gil Bok-soon’s maternal love is special. The moment when the cold man shakes while working is also when motherly love is activated. He falters in front of his father’s request to kill his son, and makes a choice he wouldn’t normally make. Toward the second half, what moves Gil Bok-soon is her daughter and motherly love. The gap between the cold killer’s warm humanity maximizes the character’s charm.
The world view of the contract killer in the work is interesting. Contract killer companies are also divided into large companies and small and medium-sized companies, and countless people work hard to get into large companies. Large corporations train trainees with a systematic education system, and when they judge that they are ready, they send them to the field together with their seniors. Even among these companies, there are rules, such as not killing children, carrying out requests made by the company, and not accepting requests independently. Taboos in works are bound to be broken eventually. It remains to be seen how these taboos will be broken and what results they will bring in the future.
The action scenes are splendid and neatly connected. There are no unnecessary movements, befitting the fight of experts in killing people. The goal is to knock people down with precise strikes. Actions using various tools such as knives, guns, ballpoint pens, and strings also add to the fun of watching. Actions using surrounding landmarks add to the feeling of hitting. There is naturally a lot of blood and a lot of tension, but it’s not unpleasant. This is thanks to the directing that did not show more than necessary scars.
In the center, there is a lead wire. He holds the center and leads the work from the beginning to the end. It shows various aspects of Gil Bok-soon, such as maternal love, daily life acting, cold killer eyes, and action without superfluity. It is enjoyable just to be able to see Jeon Do-yeon’s various faces in one work.
