According to the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau, at 5:25 pm the previous day, a black BMW sports utility vehicle (SUV) attacked passers-by at an intersection in Tianhe District, downtown Guangzhou, killing five people and injuring 13 others.

According to closed circuit television (CCTV) and black box video at the time of the accident posted on social media Weibo, the accident vehicle rushed at high speed toward dozens of passers-by crossing the crosswalk with the green traffic light turned on.

The vehicle continued to run without slowing down even after the passersby fell, entered the road in the second lane, then made a U-turn while driving forward and backward and hit another passerby while running away.

Witnesses said, “The scene of the accident quickly became a mess, with a 6-year-old girl falling down and not moving, and the injured screaming, but the driver continued to run without slowing down.”

“The driver who continued to run away even though the front bumper was severely damaged after crashing into a roadside structure during the U-turn process stopped the car and threw a bundle of 100 yuan (about 18,000 won) on the street when the road was blocked and could not move,” he said. He was calm enough to not be seen as the person who caused the accident.”

Netizens raised their voices, saying, “If you look at the scene at the time of the accident and the behavior of the driver recorded on the surrounding CCTV, it looks like it was not an accident, but a determined crime.”
