The People Power Party appears to have an opportunity for a turnaround with the first trial conviction of Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, for violating the Public Official Election Act. After the day of the sentencing, Representative Han Dong-hoon went on the offensive by mentioning Representative Lee’s trial on other charges, but from then on he announced that he would take the lead in taking care of the people’s livelihood. However, it is questionable how effective it will be to take a detour in the name of people’s livelihood without touching the core of the issue of First Lady Kim Kun-hee, which is the biggest cause of the decline in approval ratings.

The Democratic Party reduced the targets of Ms. Kim’s special prosecution law from 14 charges to three, including suspicions of manipulation of Deutsche Motors stock price, suspicions of interference in nominations sparked by Myung Tae-gyun, and suspicions discovered during the investigation of the two allegations. Some point out that it is too early to conduct a special investigation since the prosecution is investigating the suspicion of interference in nominations. At the very least, unless the special prosecutor reinvestigates the suspicion of stock price manipulation at Deutsche Motors and reaches a new conclusion, either indictment or non-indictment, judicial treatment of the winners and losers of the last presidential election cannot be said to be fair.

President Yoon Seok-yeol said at a press conference not long ago that nothing was found regarding the suspicion of Deutsche Motors stock price manipulation even though the Moon Jae-in administration mobilized dozens of prosecutors to thoroughly search the company. If so, there is no reason to avoid a re-investigation by the special prosecutor. It is difficult to understand the investigation of this suspicion, which was concluded with only a single visit to Ms. Kim while the prosecution did not even attempt to search and seize Ms. Kim and the Prosecutor General’s right to command the investigation was not restored.

The prosecution yesterday indicted CEO Lee on charges of breach of trust for using a Gyeonggi-do official car as his wife Kim Hye-kyung’s personal car and using a corporate credit card to purchase household ancestral rites supplies and pay for various meals. This is the fifth indictment. If you look at the prosecution’s indictment alone, CEO Lee’s crimes are serious, but if each meal payment is traced and investigated, there will be many heads of organizations who will be in trouble. Representative Han did not even submit the receipt for special activity expenses during his time as Minister of Justice and President Yoon’s time as Prosecutor General in a state where it could be properly recognized. Even a strict trial by the court can become biased if there is no fair prosecution by the prosecution.

If the ruling party ignores the issue of Ms. Kim as if it is trying to bury this representative risk, it will give the opposition party an excuse for an offensive and make it difficult to take care of the people’s livelihood, which requires the cooperation of the opposition party. Only by first clearing away suspicions about Ms. Kim will we be able to avoid the ‘double standards’ controversy and revive the momentum of state affairs.
