While the United States has the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Canada has the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The RCMP is a federal police force under the Ministry of Public Safety and Security of Canada that performs both administrative and judicial police functions. Since its establishment in 1873, it has been carrying out security activities throughout Canada.

There are several Korean officers in the RCMP. Among them is Superintendent Jonathan Goh. Inspector Go is a high-ranking RCMP figure who works at the Toronto branch and commands and supervises approximately 300 RCMP personnel.

Inspector Go is currently in charge of joint operations. As all of Canada is under the jurisdiction of the RCMP, cooperation with various investigative agencies such as local police, the Canadian Railway Police, and the Canadian Military Police is essential. Inspector Go is currently investigating large-scale organized crime through joint operations. Because of this, he refused to be photographed. Inspector Goh declined to elaborate on the details of the current investigation. Instead, he noted that large-scale organized crime mainly involves drug trafficking, money laundering, and stock price manipulation.

Inspector Goh refers to the RCMP as an ‘all-round player.’ He explained that the RCMP does everything from gathering criminal information to prosecuting. In other words, the RCMP controls a significant portion of the law enforcement process.

Inspector Goh also referred to RCMP officers as ‘generalists.’ He said, “There are many specialists in each type of crime in the United States, but most RCMP officers are generalists who can perform multiple roles in an integrated manner.” Accordingly, the RCMP operates a large pool of resources and deploys manpower according to demand.

The RCMP, a federal police organization, primarily responds to crimes that have negative impacts at home and abroad, such as human trafficking, drugs, and terrorism, but sometimes also acts as a local police force. Inspector Go said, “The RCMP fills the security gap in areas where there is no autonomous police force.” He added, “The RCMP has agreements with some provincial and municipal governments to carry out patrol, crime prevention, criminal investigation and prosecution duties.” Inspector Goh also explained that the RCMP is currently operating as provincial police in British Columbia and Alberta.

Meanwhile, according to Inspector Koh, out of about 30,000 RCMP employees, about 80 to 100 are Korean.
