[문화]Korea’s largest 35m antenna,’Target’…space communication’first step’

To communicate with the moon or Mars rover on Earth, you need a very large space antenna that can send and receive powerful radio waves.

The largest space antenna in Korea, with a diameter of 35m, was built to connect the Earth with the moon orbiter, which will be launched next year.

Reporter Kim Jin-du covered it.

A huge plate-shaped structure is placed on a support stand at 18m high.

It is the largest space communication antenna in Korea, measuring 35m in diameter and 100 tons in weight.

Radio waves can be transmitted and received over distances of over 2 million km, enabling deep space communication to and beyond the moon at a distance of 380,000 km.

When equipment such as an electronic control device for antenna operation is completed, the’deep space ground station’ will be officially launched in March 2022.

The first mission is to communicate with Korea’s first lunar probe, scheduled to be launched between August and September 2022.

If the completion of the probe and the deep space ground station, and the launch of the probe and the first communication are successful, the coming year of 2022 is expected to be the year of Korean space exploration taking its first historic step.
