Hyundai Motor Company found the cause of the Kona EV fire. A serious defect was found in the lithium-ion battery supplied by LG Energy Solutions.

According to industry sources on the 10th, Hyundai Motor Company’s Namyang Research Center recently discovered a critical cell defect in the recalled Kona EV battery. Afterwards, the person in charge of LG Energy Solutions visited the Namyang Research Center to directly confirm the matter and apologize.

An industry insider said, “I know that Hyundai Motor Company rebuked LG in charge of’how to make a battery like this.'”

It is known that LG Energy Solutions is currently in final coordination with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport over the announcement of the results. As the cause of the fire has already been confirmed by the battery, it is said that they are struggling to prepare measures to minimize the wavelength.

Another official said, “If the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport officially announces, LG Energy Solution should take responsibility and replace all the batteries of Kona EVs around the world.”

Hyundai Motor Company recalled 77,000 Kona EVs manufactured from September 2017 to March last year from around the world following the following fires of Kona EVs in October last year.

After a fire broke out in the recalled vehicle, he sent an apology once again saying, “I deeply apologize for the fire despite the customer’s active participation in the recall.”

If the Kona fire is finally confirmed as a battery defect, there will be controversy over compensation for several trillion won units.

Hyundai Motor Company is actively cooperating with its partners in investigations led by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and is reviewing various measures.
