The earthquake in New Zealand on the morning of the 5th local time triggered a tsunami warning in Pacific coastal countries.
New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency issued a warning at 8:30 am, saying that a tsunami could hit the coastal area due to a magnitude 8.1 earthquake in the waters near the Kermadek Islands, 800 km northeast of New Zealand’s North Island.
The first tsunami is expected to reach New Zealand’s North Island at 9:49 am.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has also warned that a tsunami could reach American Samoa and Hawaii due to a New Zealand earthquake.
In addition, he cautioned that a tsunami of 1 to 3 meters in height could occur on the coasts of Latin American countries such as Mexico, Peru and Chile as well as South Pacific island countries such as French Polynesia and Solomon Islands.
Three earthquakes of more than 7 occurred on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island and in the Kermadek Islands this morning.
