Attempts to combine vaccines for the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) from AstraZeneca in the UK and Pfizer in the US have begun. It is to fight the mutant virus that is popular recently.

A research team at Oxford University in the UK, which jointly developed the AstraZeneca vaccine, started recruiting 820 subjects for a clinical trial of a vaccination method that combines the two companies’ vaccines on the 4th (local time), the international journal Nature reported. Two vaccinations are required for both vaccines. The first is AstraZeneca and the second is Pfizer’s vaccine.

As soon as patient recruitment is made, the research team plans to inoculate two vaccines at intervals of 4 or 12 weeks and collect blood from the inoculator to check the amount of neutralizing antibodies and immune cells (T cells) that fight the corona19 virus.

AstraZeneca vaccine is known to have strengths in activating T-cells that directly kill cells, and Pfizer vaccines are known to have strengths in activating neutralizing antibodies that bind and neutralize viruses. For this reason, when the two vaccines are used together, it is expected that two different types of immune effects can be exerted, thereby enhancing the efficacy to a level that can fight mutant viruses. The research team revealed that through a pre-published paper without peer evaluation last month, it was confirmed that the combination inoculation is more effective than the single inoculation in preclinical (animal experiments).

In addition to Pfizer, the research team is conducting clinical trials for a combination vaccination method with the Russian vaccine Sputnik V. According to the results of a study published by a Russian research team on the 2nd in the international academic journal’Lancet’, Sputnik V is a vaccine that showed 91.6% prevention effect in clinical practice. The preventive effects of AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines are evaluated at 62-70% and 92-95%, respectively.

It is possible that more vaccine combinations will emerge in the future. According to Nature, Professor Nam Jae-hwan of the Catholic University’s Department of Medical Life Sciences suggested that the combination of AstraZeneca and NovaVax is more advantageous than the combination of Pfizer. Professor Nam explained, “The NovaVax vaccine induces an immune response similar to that of the Pfizer vaccine (it does not require cryogenic storage), but it is easier to produce and distribute.” Pfizer vaccine should be stored in a cryogenic environment at -70°C.

If mixed vaccinations between different vaccines become possible, it will not only respond to the mutant virus, but also solve the problem of lack of vaccine supply. Earlier, UK health officials suggested that “if you need to get a second dose and you don’t have the same type of vaccine, you can get another company’s vaccine.”
