Russian Investigative Journalist Hospitalized After Assault

Elena Milashina, an investigative journalist for the independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta, was assaulted by an armed group in the southern Chechnya Republic and has been hospitalized, according to the human rights organization Memorial.

Memorial posted on social media, “Elena Milashina has had multiple fingers broken and has lost consciousness at times. She has bruises all over her body.”

The incident occurred early in the morning on July 4th when Milashina and her lawyer, Alexander Nemov, were traveling from the airport. According to Memorial, “Both were severely kicked in the face and other parts of their bodies. They were threatened with death and had guns pointed at their heads. Their equipment was confiscated and destroyed.”

Another human rights organization, CAT, released images of Milashina in the hospital. Her hair has been pulled out, and her face and other parts of her body have green liquid on them. Both of her hands are bandaged.

Dmitry Muratov, the editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021. The newspaper also confirmed the fact that Milashina was assaulted.

Milashina has been reporting on human rights abuses in the Chechnya Republic for many years and has received awards for her work as a journalist. She and Nemov are currently hospitalized in the capital city of Grozny.

In February of last year, Novaya Gazeta announced that Milashina had received death threats from the Chechen leadership, which forced her to temporarily leave the country. Since 2000, a total of six journalists and contributors to the newspaper have died.
