Do not burn tree cuttings as an Easter fire

Wiesbaden, March 18, 2021. Bring your own garden into shape before Easter: Many a garden owner comes up with the idea of lighting an Easter fire with the freshly cut branches. The R + V Insurance information center warns, however, that there will be drastic penalties.

Strict conditions, high fines

For an Easter bonfire, a permit is usually required – which private individuals usually do not get at all. The requirements can vary depending on the city and municipality. Therefore, garden owners must ask the fire brigade or the public order office in advance. Anyone who neglects this will be left behind when neighbors alert the fire brigade. You may then have to pay for the costs of the operation. “Most cities and municipalities only allow Easter bonfires under certain conditions, for example if they actually serve to maintain customs. This is the case, for example, when an association organizes a public event, ”says Torge Brüning, fire protection engineer at R + V Versicherung. “But these will probably be canceled again this year.”

Basically, there are strict requirements for fire and environmental protection at Easter fires. “To prevent the fire from spreading, they have to be at least 50 meters away from trees and buildings and at least 100 meters away from streets. However, there are regional differences here, ”explains the R + V expert. Fire is strictly forbidden in the vicinity of the forest. In addition, neither waste nor bulky waste, treated wood or freshly cut trees belong in the flames, in order to avoid strong smoke and toxic gases. Anyone who does not adhere to these requirements can be punished with high fines – according to the Federal Environment Agency, violations of environmental law can be up to 50,000 euros.
