Neuchâtel: attempted fraud via WhatsApp
On Sunday, January 16th, 2022, fraudsters tried to get money from others via the Whatsapp messenger service using an unusual approach. The alleged fraudsters contacted the victim with an unknown cell phone number and pretended to be his son. The unknown phone number was justified with a repair of the mobile phone of the alleged son. He also stated that he still had urgent transfers to make and asked the injured party to make the transfers for him, which he fortunately refused. Only after a short time later he had contact with his actual son by other means did he recognize the victim of the attempted fraud and contacted the police station in Müllheim.
In connection with so-called telephone crimes, in which fraudsters pretend to be family members or police officers over the phone, the victims often suffer financial damage, some of which is considerable. The procedure described via a messenger service represents a new variant of this type of fraud.
