Mönchengladbach fire department

Mönchgladbach, May 31, 2021, 12:24 p.m., embankment, Krefeld-Mönchengladbach line (ots)

Around noon, the Mönchengladbach fire brigade was simultaneously reported to several fires along the railway line from Krefeld to Mönchengladbach. The vegetation burned in a total of 6 places along the route. Residents also reported a burning train in the Alsstrasse area. There was a 500 m long freight train loaded with steel rolls. The brakes on one of the wagons were blocked and ignited from the intense friction. The flying sparks then triggered the embankment fires. No fire was detectable on the train that was no longer running. In addition to smaller fire areas, the main focus was behind an industrial park on Künkelstrasse. There the embankment fire had spread so far that it threatened to spread to an adjacent industrial hall and a residential building. With a massive effort of 42 firefighters and the installation of 3 water cannons and a total of 7 C-pipes, the buildings were protected from the spread of the flames. In particular, the poor accessibility of the railway line caused problems for the fire brigade. A drone with a thermal imaging camera was used for the final inspection of the route section. The route had to be closed to rail traffic by the emergency manager during the extinguishing measures.

The rescue vehicles of the fire and rescue stations III (Rheydt), II (Holt), the fire and rescue train of the fire and rescue station I (Neuwerk), the fire truck and the rescue vehicle from the technology and logistics center, an ambulance, the units were in use the volunteer fire brigade Stadtmitte, Neuwerk, Hardt and IuK as well as the management service.
