ZZS proposes amending the Constitution to change the procedure for electing the President.

ZZS proposes to amend the Constitution by determining that the President is elected by open voting, with a majority of not less than two-thirds of all members of the Saeima.

Currently, the Constitution stipulates that the president is elected with 51 votes.

Deputy Daiga Mieriņa (ZZS) said that the political market, which is currently surrounding the presidential elections, does not promote trust in the work of the Saeima, but undermines it. She believes that the parliament lacks the political will to change anything, thereby alienating itself from its voters. According to the deputy, it is the right time to highlight the need to change the presidential election procedure.

“Currently, we elect the president with 51 votes, but to remove him from office, 66 or two-thirds of the votes are needed. This begs the question: why is it easier to elect than to recall? Changes are necessary,” believes Mieriņa.

Mieriņa proposes that the president be elected with 67 or two-thirds of the votes of the Saeima. This means that only the votes of the Saeima coalition would not be enough, it would be an obligation to address the members of the opposition as well, gaining more support in the Saeima. This, in turn, would mean that the president is not just the president of the coalition,” said the deputy.
