The handball players of the BSV Sachsen did not miss anything in the bottom of the 2nd division. They are now within striking distance of the leaders in Berlin.
It was a long arc of tension, says Norman Rentsch. The handball coach of the women’s second division club BSV Sachsen Zwickau referred to the external circumstances of the away win in Freiburg. At around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, his team set off towards Breisgau to compete punctually at 8 p.m. in the Gerhard-Graf-Sporthalle, around 580 kilometers away. “But we did it very, very well. We were focused and quickly set the course,” says Rentsch about the 29:21 (15: 9) success.

After ten minutes, the Zwickau women were already 6-2. By the break they built their lead to 15: 9. Despite the sovereign victory, the trainer saw further potential: “It would have been possible to do more. We lost the thread a bit and weren’t quite as aggressive in the inner block. Freiburg did well and played us above all over the circle.” Between the 53rd and 55th minute, the hosts reduced their deficit several times to three goals. However, the BSV did not really stumble at the bottom from the Breisgau. “We got out of the negative phase well and improved it,” said Rentsch. The final point at 29:21 was set by 16-year-old Jasmina Gierga with her first Bundesliga goal.
The coach knew just after the half-time break how valuable the win would be. Because although the Zwickau women were away for the first time at HSG Freiburg, the coaching staff also looked at the federal capital. There the front runner Füchse Berlin played against TSV Nord Harrislee from 7.30 p.m. – and suffered his second defeat of the season in the 16th game at 24:27. The foxes, who have already played one game more than their pursuers, now have a score of 27: 5 points. Behind them are the BSV Sachsen and the SG H2Ku Herrenberg with 25: 5 points within striking distance.
“That was very important to keep the league exciting,” said Rentsch. Now everything is set back to zero. “How the situation develops is interesting for everyone. Those who stay cool will prevail in the end,” said the instructor. The next test for the Zwickau women is on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the local sports hall in Neuplanitz. Then the second in the table receives the third from bottom TV Beyeröhde Wuppertal. In the first half of the season, BSV Sachsen prevailed in North Rhine-Westphalia with 27:24. After two rest days on Sunday and Monday, the Zwickau team will start preparing for the game on Tuesday.
