Zverev, the first big name to say goodbye to Miami

A Top 10 has already said goodbye and another placed first in the Miami Masters 1000, World No. 7 Alexander Zverev fell to Emil Ruusuvuori on his debut in the second round, while Daniil Medvedev easily edged Yen-Hsun Lu.

Zverev continues his uneven gait. Last year, the German agreed to his first Grand Slam final, at the US Open, which he lost after taking a clear advantage over Dominic Thiem, and now he had just won the ATP 500 in Acapulco, but lost with the rising Ruusuvuori (83 °) and said goodbye at the first Masters 1000 of 2021.

The German was comfortable in the opening set, but began to suffer with his usual double faults and the Finn grew, who finally won 1-6, 6-3 and 6-1. It was a hard blow to the illusion of the youngest of the Zverev brothers, just in a tournament without four of the top six in the ranking, as Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Roger Federer were discharged.

For the Finn it was his second win over a Top 10 opponent, having beaten Thiem once for the Davis Cup. This is just the second M1000 that Ruusuvuori disputes, a name that little by little is reaching more and more the ears of tennis fans.

Instead, Medvevev made his best debut as world No. 2, now as Djokovic’s guard on the ATP list. The Russian beat Taiwanese Yen-Hsun Lu, 37 years old and now 1,020th in the world ranking, 6-2 and 6-2.

This was also Medvedev’s first match as the top seed at a Masters 1000 event. With this win, he won 25 of his last 27 matches, including 12 over Top 10 rivals. Now Australian Alex Popyrin awaits him ( 86 °).
