German tennis player Alexander Zverev won the Champions Tournament for the second time in his career.
The Olympic winner from Tokyo is celebrating his sixth laurel this year and nineteenth overall. The 25-year-old Hamburg native earned $ 2.143 million, over 48 million crowns.
In the finals, Zverev relied on excellent service and each set decided with one break. In the first set, he took Medvedev’s serve in the third game and in the second set at the beginning. He worked confidently in the exchanges, he was able to be patient and, above all, from the forehand he sent millimeter-accurate winning shots.
Zverev won the match in an hour and a quarter, beating the ace from the second hand during the match. “There is no better way to end the season. I’m excited,” the German praised himself in an interview on the court. His joy was all the greater because he had defeated Medvedev after the previous five losses in a row. “I don’t know if it was a perfect match, but I had to play great to make it,” said Zverev.
He became only the fourth tennis player in the history of the Champions Tournament and the first in 31 years to beat the first and second world players in the semifinals and finals. Zverev eliminated world number one Novak Djokovic from Serbia in the semifinals, Medvedev is currently second in the ATP standings.
Zverev is the tenth player in history with more than one title from the Champions Tournament. Of his compatriots, only Boris Becker is better off, who succeeded three times in the final event of the season.
Perfect retribution
In the final, Herbert and Mahut got the retribution for Wednesday’s defeat in the basic group. They lost the first duel in Turin with Ram and Salisbury across the canal in the second set in the 11:13 supertiebreak, but this time they had the ending firmly in hand. The short game of the second set was clearly controlled 7: 0.
Herbert and Mahut played for the title for the third time in a row at the Champions Tournament. In 2018, they lost to Americans Mike Bryan and Jack Sock, and a year later they succeeded in a duel with Raven Klaasen and Michael Venus. They have now become the first French couple in history to win the final event of the season twice.
