Paris. Alexander Zverev beat local favorite Ugo Humbert 6-2, 6-2 in the final of the Paris Masters 1000 on Sunday and will return to number two in the world rankings, the best position of his career.
The German will surpass Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in the official rankings on Monday for the first time since the serious injury he suffered at the 2022 French Open.
“It was a performance worthy of the circumstances,” said Zverev, the third seed in the tournament.
“It was pretty good, I have to say. I knew I had to play like that to win. Ugo is an incredible player. Also, playing in Paris, I think he played even better than he usually does,” he said. “I knew that once the public got involved it would be very, very difficult. I had to remove it soon. I did it and I’m happy about it.”
The Roland Garros runner-up quickly broke his rival’s serve in the first game, helped by several unforced errors from the Frenchman. His performance was equally convincing in the second set and the 27-year-old won the Paris Masters for the first time.
“I want to thank my team. The work we have done in the last two and a half years to get back to this position, everyone has had to sacrifice a lot to be able to play on these beautiful courts again,” he said. .
“There was never a 100% guarantee that I would get back to this level after Roland Garros two years ago, when I basically broke everything possible in my ankle,” he added. “Winning the title here in Paris means a lot to me, but I’m sure it also means a lot to everyone sitting in my box. They’ve done a lot to help me lift this title.”
With this victory, Zverev became the player with the most matches won on the ATP Tour this season (66), one ahead of world number one, Jannik Sinner.
