To make care for children with asthma even better, the children’s lung team and the Zuyderland Innovation Lab have jointly designed a solution for home monitoring and virtual coaching: ‘Zuydie at home, asthma care for children, as much at home as possible.’ A study that was recently started in children between the ages of 6 and 18 focuses on the effect of this solution.
‘The first participants went home with great enthusiasm and their own “asthma kit” in hand’, says the children’s lung team of Zuyderland. ‘Together with data analysts from Zuyderland, we hope to recognize patterns in the run-up to asthma complaints in order to be able to provide more adequate and possibly preventive treatment. Nationally, this would really be a unique combination of digital monitoring and coaching for children with asthma, a nice addition to our current asthma care.’
Development
The ‘Asthma in children’ program was developed with developer Luscii of the Thuismeaten app. The app is combined with a spirometer, a device that children use to measure their lung function at home. A Fitbit smartwatch, which monitors heart rate, activity and sleep, among other things, should also support parents and children to recognize complaints themselves (even) better and thus act early. The platform thus offers chronic home monitoring during a stable asthma period, but also virtual coaching during an asthma attack. The app also contains a lot of information about asthma and what to do in case of complaints.
As home as possible
About 5-10% of children in the Netherlands have asthma, making it the most common chronic disease among this group. Within Zuyderland, too, a considerable number of children come to the emergency department or emergency clinic every year because of an asthma attack and many children are undergoing treatment. ‘It is extremely important that these children are not limited by their asthma,’ emphasizes the children’s lung team of Zuyderland. ‘This study can help with that and is also “as home as possible”, something that fits Zuyderland completely.’
Together with the MosaKids children’s hospital Maastricht, Zuyderland is now investigating whether this is the case project will have a joint follow-up for all children with asthma in South Limburg?
