In Zuyderland, a team of doctors has performed an innovative procedure known as renal denervation as part of a large international study. This is a promising treatment for people with high blood pressure. The treatment is carried out by interventional cardiologists, supported by internist-vascular physicians, vascular surgeons, a team of HCK employees and anaesthetists.
The procedure
Renal denervation is an invasive procedure aimed at treating high blood pressure by interrupting the nerves in the renal arteries. These nerves play an important role in regulating blood pressure. Denervating these nerves reduces excessive nervous system activity, allowing better control of blood pressure.
The first procedure
The procedure took place in a specially equipped cardiac catheterization room. The interventional cardiologist inserted a special renal denervation catheter through the groin and navigated it toward the arteries leading to the kidneys. Advanced imaging techniques were then used to identify the exact denervation locations.
The actual denervation was performed by directing radiofrequency energy to the nerves surrounding the arteries of the kidneys, using great precision so as not to damage surrounding tissues.
Results and future
Immediately after the procedure, the patient was carefully monitored and no complications were found. Yet the results of this renal denervation may not be noticeable immediately: some patients experience a gradual drop in their blood pressure over the following weeks and months.
