In this podcast episode:

Business is booming at “Ayverdi’s” in Zurich Affoltern: A kebab skewer is rotating on the wall, people enter the restaurant and are greeted warmly by Murti Ayverdi and his brother. Ayverdi’s is not your average kebab shop, says Zurich editor Giorgio Scherrer: “The brothers and founders of the restaurant have moved with the times and adapted to their neighborhood and the huge changes that have taken place there in recent years.”

Affoltern used to be something like a slightly run-down suburb of Zurich. Now more and more people are moving here, new apartments are being built and a tram line will soon be built. Now people live here who are prepared to pay 25 francs for a luxury kebab.

Even in the evenings, it becomes clear how much the suburbs are changing. Here, too, living space is becoming scarce, despite new buildings being built. Some farming villages have already become “dormitory towns” with good S-Bahn connections but little social life. Because “growth also brings the city’s problems out into the suburbs,” says Giorgio Scherrer in the latest episode of “NZZ Akzent.”
