Zurich Rocked by Property Damage and Pyrotechnics

Major actions in Zurich (November 30, 2024): The police prevent an increase during a football derby and an unauthorized demonstration.

On Saturday, November 30, 2024, a large group of Zurich city police and cantonal police were deployed to prevent rival fans of FC Zurich and the Grasshopper Club Zurich from fighting. An unauthorized demonstration was also held in District 4.

Before the soccer match between Super League teams FC Zurich and Grasshopper Club Zurich, both fan camps asked people to gather at the Josefwiese in District 5 almost at the same time. The city police announced in this regard (press release from November 27, 2024 / 2:38 pm: The city police do not accept fan marches from Josefwiese) that they do not accept this plan. The Josefwiese was cordoned off by the police on Saturday night. As a result, both fan camps gathered at other locations in District 5 during the in evening. GC Annex at Turbinenplatz and FCZ fans at Klingenpark. The FCZ fans march started shortly before 5pm. While pyrotechnic objects were lit, hundreds of people marched from Klingenpark along Limmatstrasse to Limmatplatz and then through Langstrasse – Stauffacherstrasse – Zypressenstrasse – Badenerstrasse to the Letzigrund stadium, in close contact with the police.

A demonstration was called at 5 pm at Helvetiaplatz. Several dozen people responded to this call. The demonstration started towards the city center on Stauffacherstrasse at 5:30 pm. After a further march along Werdstrasse – Kasernenstrasse – Militarystrasse – Langstrasse, we went through Badenerstrasse – Ankerstrasse back to Helvetiaplatz, where the demonstration dispersed. Along the parade route there was occasional damage to buildings due to rain and fireworks were cancelled.

The GC fan parade started shortly before 6pm with hundreds of people from Turbinenplatz on Pfingstweidstrasse towards Duttweilerbrücke. In the first few meters, a dozen fire extinguishers were lit. Since at the last derby GC fans threw away more than a hundred of these fire extinguishers, which are a serious health hazard, it was necessary to consider that more explosions of dangerous fire extinguishers could occur on the other marching route. For this reason, the city police stopped the march of these fans on the Duttweiler Bridge and everyone was searched. Most of the 591 people who were investigated were released on site without further measures. Three people were taken to the police station for further clarification. Masking and pyrotechnic material were widely seized.

After the game, there were no special events due to the large police presence on the parade routes and at the train stations. The city police were deployed in cooperation with the Zurich cantonal police and the transport police were on duty at the train stations.
