Four people are said to have tried to extort a Bitcoin payment from the ZKB. The ZKB filed a complaint, whereupon the Zurich police arrested the suspects.
The Zurich Cantonal Police have arrested four people. They are accused of blackmailing the ZKB. After a brief investigation, the Zurich police were able to arrest the suspected perpetrators, as the Public Prosecutor’s Office II and the Zurich Cantonal Police wrote in a joint statement.
The blackmailers threatened to publish customer data unless the ZKB transferred 61 bitcoins by Friday, September 6, 2024. 61 bitcoins correspond to around 3 million francs. To substantiate their demands, the blackmailers sent individual data sets to some journalists. Instead of giving in to the blackmailers, the ZKB filed a complaint.
Sea “SRF” the police were able to secure the stolen customer data from the suspected perpetrators. According to ZKB, the incident was not a cyber attack with data leakage. The affected customer data was not made public and customer funds were not at risk. One of those arrested was a ZKB employee until 2023, writes “SRF”.
