Zurich/Berlin (MH) – The Zurich Opera House is planning the renovation of its historic main building and the extension built in 1984. The latter is to be demolished and replaced by a new building. “One goal of the structural development is to remedy the fundamental defects in the property so that the opera house can continue to fulfill its mission,” said Markus Notter, Chairman of the Board of Directors, to the press in Zurich on Thursday.
The extension building, popularly known as “Fleischkäse”, contains, among other things, rehearsal stages, workshops and cloakrooms as well as the ticket office, the restaurant and the Bernhard Theater. It was said that numerous provisions of modern occupational safety could not be implemented in the reinforced concrete building. The Building Department of the Canton of Zurich is now investigating whether adding a storey to the existing building would be sufficient. The result should be available in autumn 2023.
A possible construction phase would take place in the first half of the 2030s at the earliest. However, in order to improve the situation of the employees in a timely manner, a temporary bridging building with 330 square meters of usable space is to be built in the summer of 2024. The single-storey wooden construction on the roof of the extension building will later be reusable elsewhere.
The historic old building of the Zurich Opera itself is said to be in good condition thanks to constant repairs. Nevertheless, the seating and the technical systems would have to be renewed and barrier-free access to all event locations would have to be created.
