(PM) From now on, around 3,300 additional square meters of solar systems are available on public buildings in the city of Zurich in the citizen participation model Ewz.solarzüri. Additional systems are being planned with the aim of making Zurich a solar city.

In mid-May, the electorate of the city of Zurich anchored the goal of net zero by 2040 in the municipal code with 74.9% approval. This goes hand in hand with the forced replacement of oil and gas heating systems with heat pumps or connections to local and district heating networks. The Ukraine war and the massive increase in energy prices that followed are further accelerators for promoting independence from fossil fuels. As early as 2021, the city of Zurich decided on a photovoltaics strategy with comprehensive measures to quadruple solar expansion by the end of this decade.
the losolution for tenants
In the citizen participation model ewz.solarzüri, around 3,300 square meters of solar systems are now available for apartment tenants. As soon as 80 percent of the area at a facility has been pre-financed using the crowdfunding principle, ewz will implement the corresponding facility. Ewz customers buy their share of a solar system for 250 francs per square meter and receive 80 kilowatt hours of electricity credited to their bill every year for a period of twenty years. Plots are now available on the following city buildings:
- Lachenzelg Ost school building in Höngg: 1860 square meters
- School building by the water in Höngg: 1170 square meters
- Dark wood house in Altstetten: 100 square meters
- Station Altstetten station: 165 square meters
Once the systems have been built at these locations, from January 2023 a total of over 37,000 square meters of solar power will be generated in the city of Zurich for the public participation model Ewz.solarzüri. In cooperation with other municipal service departments, ewz is working intensively on new locations.
