The city of Zurich is pushing ahead with the work on its “Züri City-Card”: the municipal council approved 3.2 million francs for it on Wednesday. Sans-papiers could benefit from the card, the council left was convinced. Commoners doubted that the ID-like paper would have the hoped-for benefit.
The SVP criticized that parallel law was being created for the city of Zurich. However, with a self-issued ID, the residence of undocumented persons would not simply be legal.
The FDP described the planned Züri City-Card, among other things, as illegal, undemocratic and unsuitable: the city could not undermine the existing immigration law at the municipal level. Since the concern of the SP, Greens and AL to protect Sans-Papiers cannot be implemented, the deal should be rejected.
With 38 to 74 votes, the local council spoke out against rejection on Wednesday evening. And with 65 to 40 votes, he approved the credit line of 3.2 million francs requested by the city council. This should prepare the introduction of the new card.
