Zurich increases the asylum quota for the municipalities

The canton of Zurich is increasing the refugee quota for the municipalities from 0.5 to 0.9 percent because of the Ukraine war. This means that the Zurich municipalities and cities have to take in more refugees than according to the distribution key that has been in force up to now. Gymnasiums and civil protection facilities are now being prepared.

Since January 2020, the admission rate has been five asylum seekers per 1,000 inhabitants. This results in a refugee quota of 0.5 percent. This distribution key is also used for refugees with protection status S.

Because of the Ukraine war, more and more refugees are now being distributed to the communities: There are now nine refugees for every 1,000 inhabitants, as the canton announced on Friday. The asylum quota will be increased to 0.9 percent as of April 19.

The top priority is that these people can all be accommodated, security director Mario Fehr (independent) is quoted as saying. “I am confident that the community will be able to build the necessary structures.”

The canton is also creating additional capacities. These are mainly used for short-term accommodation in emergencies or over the weekend.

The Association of Municipal Presidents pointed out in a statement that, given the large influx of refugees, it was now also necessary to prepare “less comfortable accommodation” such as civil protection facilities and gyms.

Every effort would be made to meet the newly established admission quota. However, the lead time is comparatively short, criticize the mayors.

Between 700 and 1,400 Ukrainians register in one of the federal asylum centers every day. According to the applicable distribution key, 17.9 percent of this is allocated to the canton of Zurich. According to estimates by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), 4.3 million people have fled abroad since war broke out in Ukraine.
