Zurich Airport Voting Newspaper Design Dispute Headed to Federal Court

He rejected her objection to the design of the voting newspaper. These are now going to the Federal Court.

The government council announced on Thursday that there was no violation of freedom of voting. The State Chancellery extended the deadline several times for the No Committee to revise the text and graphics. Nevertheless, there was “no agreement”.

Specifically, the issue was that the graphics submitted contained untrue statements from the government’s perspective. These graphics were ultimately not included in the voting newspaper.

There were also discrepancies in the text. According to the government council, a final version sent by the no committee ultimately reached the state chancellery too late.

Arguments “changed without consultation”

The no committee criticized the fact that the government council had “changed and shortened” the arguments against extending the slopes without consultation. With the complaint, the committee demanded that the newspaper be changed and reprinted.

Last week, the government council had already rejected a request from opponents of the slopes for precautionary measures. They wanted to ensure that the distribution of the voting newspaper was stopped immediately. However, the documents had already been printed and delivered to the communities and logistics partners.

The request went too far for the government council because the reports on all voting proposals would have been affected by a stop. On March 3rd, voters will not only decide on the runway extensions at Zurich Airport, but also on the bank initiative for a lakeside path, the anti-chaotic initiative and a constitutional amendment.

Committee criticizes government council

The referendum committee stated in a statement on Thursday that the fact that the government council supports the slope extensions and at the same time acts as a decision-making body on the voting rights complaint is unacceptable.

The government council’s statements were also “thin, simply inaccurate and outrageous”. The referendum committee is therefore sticking to its voting rights complaint and is taking it to the Federal Court.

Zurich Airport shares temporarily lost 0.50 percent to 177.80 francs on the SIX.
