Zurich Airport will put the first 3D scanners into operation for baggage screening in the next few months. They are intended to simplify security checks and thus shorten queues.
The first 3D scanners will be put into operation in the next few months, said Josef Felder, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Zurich Airport, in an interview with the “NZZ” on Monday. Zurich Airport already planned tests with computer tomography scanners in 2019. Because of the pandemic, the purchase of 3D scanners was put on hold.
“During the pandemic, we had the right to survive without government aid,” said Felder. «We succeeded. But we have postponed investments.” The purchase of the 3D scanners was one of them. This gap will now be closed.
The new 3D scanners take three-dimensional images of hand luggage during security checks. Liquids and laptops no longer have to be unpacked, which saves a lot of time. In addition, fewer follow-up checks are necessary. The technology is already being used in other countries.
