Is Zurich a green city, Ms. Scapozza?

Yes, very much so. 25 percent of the urban area consists of forest. We owe our forefathers beautiful historic green spaces around the lake basin. Parks, cemeteries and hills in and around the city are interspersed with trees. But: Greener is always possible.

How do you green a city that is already largely built?

A city is in constant transformation. We need to accommodate 100,000 more people in the city by 2050. This means that the city will continue to be built from within. Ten additional public parks are also planned.

How great is the biodiversity in the city of Zurich?

We aim for 15 percent ecologically valuable areas. We are currently at almost eleven percent in the settlement area. The remaining four percent, around 230 hectares, are to be ecologically upgraded by 2040. The biodiversity in urban areas is considerable. The population of field crickets, checkerboard butterflies…
