Mexico City. In an explosive fight, the Mexican boxer Gilberto Southpaw Ramírez defeated the British Chris Billam-Smith by unanimous decision to unify the WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles, this Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The native of Mazatlán, Sinaloa, defended the title of the World Boxing Association (WBA), while his rival held that of the World Boxing Organization (WBO), and after winning both titles, he warned that he will seek to be the undisputed champion of the category.
“Now I want to (face) the WBC (World Boxing Council) champion, or the Australian Jai Opetaia (monarch of the International Boxing Federation) because they say he is number one, but I consider myself number one in this division” , he declared at the end of the fight.
After an extraordinary and forceful performance, the judges did not hesitate to give the Mexican the victory with scores of 116-112, 116-112 and 116-113.
In one of the previous fights within the function called Latino Nightbroadcast live on the DAZN.com platform, also Mexican William Shrimp Zepeda won the interim WBC lightweight title by defeating American Tevin Farmer by split decision.
After taking a few minutes, the judges gave a double 95-94 for Zepeda and a 95-94 for Farmer.
