Jakarta –
Commerce Minister (Mendag) Zulkifli Hasan (Zulhas) alluded to Nike shoe factories leaving Indonesia for Vietnam. According to him, one of the reasons is related to wages.
This was expressed by Zulhas in his speech during the ceremony for the release of the Nike export shoes made by PT Pratama Abadi Industri. On that occasion, the President and Director of Nike Indonesia, Joseph Warren, was also present.
“I used to come here, but they said some of their Nikes moved to Vietnam, I don’t know why, because here there is only reform, labor problems, wages keep increasing every year. Now Jakarta, Tangerang are wages high “. he said while exporting Nike PT Pratama Abadi Industri shoes on Tuesday (9/13/22).

Due to this problem, Zulhas said Vietnam is now a country with higher Nike shoe exports than Indonesia. Even so, Zulhas believes that the Indonesian footwear industry will still be able to develop.
“We are still in 6th place, industrial footwear that is exported. With a share of 3.88%, they can still be developed,” he said.
“Vietnam has quickly taken advantage of the wage turmoil, Indonesia has to go through it because we are only reforming. Slowly starting to stabilize, today is better than 5 years ago, 5 years ago is better than 10 years ago,” he added.
To this end, Zulhas also requested an additional Nike shoe factory to increase production and export potential. One of them asked to build a factory is the Sumatra area. “It is necessary to think that Sumatra has 1 factory and in Sumatra the wages are cheap, the minimum wage is low below Rp. 2 million,” he said.
“If I can open it in Lampung, Lampung is where I was born. Sumatra, Medan and Lampung are small. In Lampung, if you want to find partners, I’ll find them if you want. If not, that’s fine too.” she joked.
In response, the president, director of Nike Indonesia, Joseph Warren, said his party had considered building another shoe factory in Indonesia. However, he said there was still a lot to consider in building the factory.
“The demand is in terms of available manpower, labor wages, goods, infrastructure, there are still some challenges to overcome in an infrastructural area, especially port facilities. But Nike is very busy in Indonesia, 30% of ours. production is in Indonesia. And we (Nike Indonesia) who have the highest growth in the global Nike network, “he said.
Warren also explained, not focusing on just one place to build a factory. He was also reluctant to comment on Zulhas’ request to build factories in Sumatra, including Lampung.
“It depends. We will not limit it to one place. Sumatra is an island, not just Lampung. So I will not focus this comment on Lampung alone. I think Indonesia remains an important country for us, and I think we will continue to develop it. ” Our business is here, “she concluded.
